Developing a soil column system to measure hydrogeophysical properties of unconsolidated sediment

Abstract Geophysical methods have been increasingly used to characterize the Earth's critical zone (CZ) and monitor hydrological processes occurring within it. For a quantitative interpretation, geophysical studies of CZ materials are necessary, thus require more sophisticated laboratory setups. In this study, we develop hydrogeophysical soil column system measure key hydraulic electrical properties regolith in CZs. The developed consists two components: (a) novel probe that measures pore water pressure potential soils (b) cylindrical cell hold samples. can be arranged perform both saturated flow drainage tests. test is similar traditional constant head experiment for determining conductivity streaming coupling coefficient. tests produce transient responses cumulative overflow, pressure, potential. These data estimate sample's with coupled, stochastic inversion. A sand sample demonstrate procedures applying new system. measured coefficient typical ranges sands reported literature. inversion‐estimated parameters well reproduce during sample. Moreover, good agreement those independently test, showing robustness
